What D-mannose is
D-mannose is a simple sugar, a close relative of glucose. It occurs naturally in small amounts in fruits such as cranberries, apples and peaches. Commercially it is produced from plant sources and dried to a fine white powder.
- Looks like: fine white crystalline powder, much like caster sugar
- Tastes: sweet, a little less sweet than table sugar
- Dissolves: easily, in plain water
Pure D-mannose powder: reading the label
The ingredients list is the whole story. On a pure powder it reads one word: D-mannose. Things you may see on other products:
- Flavours and sweeteners, common in flavoured powders and chewables
- Flow agents such as silicon dioxide, used to stop clumping
- Capsule shell ingredients such as gelatine or cellulose
- Blends, where D-mannose is one of several ingredients
Handling and storage
- Weigh it on kitchen scales for consistency. Spoon sizes vary.
- Stir into plain water. It dissolves in seconds.
- Keep the lid on and the bag somewhere cool and dry. Damp air makes it clump.
